The first calculator was the Abacus, still used today. In 17th century, the first mechanical calculators were built. Mechanical and later electromechanical calculators occupied the desktops until they were replaced by completely electronic calculators. These were at first the size of todays computers, but with the advance of electronics and development of integrated circuits, they became small enough to fit into a pocket by 1970.
